3 Tips 💡from a Super Startup on creating the Killer App 🚀

Every startup wants to deliver the next killer app. So why are they so rare?

In this edition, we give you three simple yet overlooked reasons that an app succeeds. And we hear it from Trent Hammond, founder of Profolio — a startup that ranked #2 for the week it launched on Product Hunt.

Profolio is a Framer component library that allows UX and UI designers to easily and quickly create stunning portfolios. It’s now used by a wide range of designers, including those who work at major companies like Google.

Let’s hear Hammond's tips for making your app a killer app.

Make It Undeniable

If you make a product undeniably better than the competitors, 95% of your work is already done. Of course, starting where you are and iterating to great is a valid path. But if you don’t know the reason why your product is going to be a game changer, you have a major problem.

As Hammond says, “[When] building my own design portfolio, I found the current portfolio builders on the market to be fairly average. They were either very limiting and lacked customization options, or they were very time-consuming with a steep learning curve, so I thought I could create a better solution.”

Real Experiences Form the Idea and the Drive

How does a tech startup know how to service its customers? By having walked in their shoes before. Hammond didn’t start Profolio in a vacuum. He spent years needing this exact product. His recommendation for success? “Start with identifying real problems and not just thinking of exciting ideas!”

Having that connection to the customer’s experience becomes part of the drive and mission. Hammond reflects, “I thought of how Profolio could really help a lot of designers with getting a job. This is also 100% a product that I wish I had when designing my own UX portfolio as it really would have saved me a ton of time, so I could really see the value it would hopefully provide other designers.”

Growth Mindset

When Hammond began the Profolio journey, he didn’t have all the skills he needed yet, but that didn’t stop him.

“I was learning Framer while creating the component library, which could be a bit tricky at times but nothing extraordinarily difficult,” Hammond says, reminding us that we can grow during the development process rather than waiting to have everything we need.

Next Steps

Luckily, Portfolio no longer needs to raise money, and its ongoing development aims to continue to address more and more needs of UX and UI designers.
